ANGLICANISM IN EUROPE

History & current status of Anglican Churches in Europe

English speaking churches and congregations have been established on the Continent of Europe since before the Reformation. Follow this link for a short historical note on the Anglican jurisdictions in Europe.

There are four Anglican jurisdictions on mainland Europe: The Iglesia Española Reformada Episcopal (Spanish Reformed Episcopal Church or IERE), A Igreja Lusitana (The Lusitanian Church of Portugal), the Convocation of American Churches in Europe (ECUSA) and the Church of England’s Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe. At the 1998 Lambeth Conference these communities asked for its support and encouragement as they explored new structures, including the possibility of a Province, for European Anglicanism.

This process has entered into a new phase of grass-roots consultation into how we can give practical effect to the closer relations we desire both as a contribution to the unity of the Church as a whole and as a means of doing mission together. Through this site we aim to keep informed all those who have an interest in the progress of these consultations.

The Spanish Episcopal Reformed Church (IERE)

The Spanish Episcopal Reformed Church (IERE) was formed in Gibraltar in 1868. In 1880 the Bishop of Mexico visited Spain and accepted under his care several congregations that sought to follow Anglican teaching and order, under the leadership of a former Roman Catholic priest, Juan Bautista Cabrera.Fr. Cabrera was subsequently consecrated, in 1894, as the first bishop of the IERE by Lord Plunkett, then Bishop of Meath in the Church of Ireland. The establishment of full Communion with the Church of England in 1963 prepared the way full integration into the Anglican Communion which was negotiated and agreed on 2 November 1980.

For those with a good grasp of the Spanish language, Bishop Carlos Lopez Lozano, the current Bishop of IERE, has written a book “Antecedentes de la Iglesia Española Reformada Episcopal”. This, and additional information about IERE and its congregations, can be obtained from:

The LusitanianChurch (Portugal)

Igreja Lusitana Católica Apostólica Evangélica (Lusitanian Catholic Apostolic Evangelical Church of Portugal) was organised at a Synod held on the 8 March 1880. The synod was presided over by Bishop Riley (of the American Episcopal Church) and gathered a group of Roman Catholic clergy and lay people who wished to commit themselves to an Anglican expression of Christian faith and order. A constitution was approved, and Bishop Riley undertook to present the ILCAE’s request for a bishop. Initially, Bishops of the Church of Ireland offered episcopal ministry and oversight until a native Portuguese was elected bishop. The first bishop of the ILCAE was consecrated in 1958. Following the lead of the AmericanChurch, the Churches of Ireland and England (and later other Anglican provinces and Old Catholic Churches) a Concordat of full Communion was established with the LusitanianChurch. The Church was fully integrated into the Anglican Communion on the 5th of July 1980.
